Animal Services Manager, San Luis Obispo County Animal Services

Eric Anderson graduated from the University of California in Santa Cruz with a degree in Psychobiology, affording him the opportunity to work on a diversity of wildlife species including peregrine falcons, elephant seals and various primates.  He attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University with the intention of pursuing a career in zoo medicine but quickly developed a passion for the diagnostics, therapy and care of companion animals. Following graduation with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree, he practiced veterinary medicine in both Washington and California with a specific emphasis on small animal emergency and critical care medicine.

In 2001, he assumed the role of Animal Services Manager for the County of San Luis Obispo, a position which he has occupied for the last 23 years. His background in both wildlife population studies and companion animal medicine has provided him with a unique and valuable perspective in addressing the many animal-related challenges facing his community on a regular basis.

Dr. Anderson is a past president of the California Animal Control Director’s Association (a predecessor organization to CalAnimals) and a collaborator on the California Animal Sheltering Stakeholders’ whitepaper Charting a Path Forward: Achieving California’s policy to save all adoptable and treatable animals.

Dr. Anderson and his family live in northern San Luis Obispo County and share their home with Walter the Great Dane, goats Becky and Munchie, an ever-increasing number of chickens, and a resident population deer, turkey, and the occasional mountain lion. In his free time, he enjoys backpacking, working outdoors, and napping under a shady oak tree.
