Animal Services Manager, Placer County Animal Services

Katie has worked in the Animal Sheltering industry for more than 18 years, serving previously as the Assistant Director at OC Animal Care in Orange County, CA. During her time at OC Animal Care, she also oversaw the Volunteer, Foster, Public Education/Outreach, Rescue Coordination and TNR programs, which were responsible for saving thousands of shelter animals each year.

Beginning in 2016, Katie joined Placer County as the Animal Services Manager at Placer County Animal Services in Auburn. Since joining the team, she has been responsible for the opening of the new, state-of-the-art animal shelter, increasing community engagement and developing new and progressive shelter programs.

During her time at Placer County Animal Services, Katie has led her team in partnering with local non-profits to provide free spay/neuter to more than 1,000 community cats and kittens, outsourcing neonatal kitten rearing for the shelter, developing, and building a robust foster program for older kittens and implementing a barn cat and TNR program for community cats. Additionally, she has led a team of emerging supervisors to implement successful social media and marketing programs that have increased adoptions and strengthened community, municipal and non-profit engagement.

These programs have not only been recognized repeatedly by the National Association of Counties, California State Association of Counties and the City-County Communications & Marketing Association, they have proved incredibly successful for lifesaving, allowing Placer County Animal Services to achieve a live release rate of more than 90% since 2017!  Additionally, during a 2022/2023 Grand Jury investigation of Placer County Animal Services, the Grand Jury made no recommendations for improvements to the Animal Services program, a first for Placer County Animal Services.

When not spending time with the staff and animals at the shelter, Katie enjoys living in Nevada County with her husband, dog and three cats and can often be found hiking the beautiful trails hidden throughout the community.
