Education & Training Resources

You will not want to miss this exceptional opportunity to learn from equine expert, Dr. Grant Miller. In this talk, Dr. Miller will present an advanced level overview of conducting an equine humane case investigation. He will focus on applicable laws, processing the crime scene, examining the horse itself, and collecting and presenting evidence in court.

Presenter: Grant Miller received his undergraduate degree from UC Davis in animal science in 1999 and his veterinary degree from the same university in 2004. Immediately after graduating, he began working as an equine and livestock practitioner in the northern San Francisco Bay Area, focusing on geriatric medicine, sports medicine, veterinary forensics, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. He founded a 501(c)3 organization called The Sonoma County CHANGE Program to assist local animal law enforcement with equine humane cases.  Since its inception in 2007, CHANGE has assisted in rehabilitating and rehoming over 120 critically ill and starved horses. Dr. Miller has co-authored and published several articles on the subject of management and rehabilitation of starved horses as well as guidelines on equine care standards in the State of California.  He has also served as an expert witness in several dozen equine humane cases, and his training in large animal forensic sciences has assisted in testimony that has resulted in several felony and misdemeanor convictions.

CalAnimals provides trainings throughout the year for California animal welfare professionals on a variety of topics. Our Animal Law Enforcement Training Academies, in partnership with Marin Humane, United States Service Command, and San Diego Humane Society, are the go-to training programs for animal control officers and humane officers throughout California. Additionally, we provide one-day trainings and webinars and our new on-demand CalAnimals Officer Academy.

We don’t just photograph animals…we photograph circumstances

Learn what to shoot and how to shoot it.

This course is geared toward becoming a better investigator.  It differs from our forensic photography class as it targets daily work rather than narrowing to criminal case.  That makes it an asset for both the new ACO and the seasoned officer.  Portray the circumstances of the incident, photographically show the relevance of what you find, and illustrate the elements of the violation.  Make proper photographic capture a habit of your daily work to ensure your case package reflects the professional that you are.
